Patricia M. Ranum's Research and Writing

Publications on word-music relationships

1982 — "Le phrasé des danses baroques selon les paroles," presented at the First International Colloquium on Old Dance, Besançon, organized by Philippe Beaussant (later named artistic director of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles)

1985 — "Les ‘caractères' des danses françaises," Recherches sur la Musique française classique, 23 (1985), pp. 45-70

1986 — "Audible rhetoric and mute rhetoric: the 17th-century French sarabande," Early Music, 14 (1986), pp. 22-40

1988 — "Y a-t-il une rhétorique des airs de danse français?," acts of the colloquium on rhetoric held at Pommersfelden in 1988, in V. Kapp, ed., Die Sprache der Zeichen und Bilder, Rhetorik und nonverbale Kommunikation in der frühen Neuzeit, Ars Rhetorica, no. 1, Marburg: Hitzeroth, 1990, pp. 238-254

1991 — Méthode de la prononciation latine dite vulgaire ou à la française, petite méthode à l'usage des chanteurs et des récitants d'après le manuscrit de Dom Jacques Le Clerc (Arles: Actes Sud, 1991), with a preface by William Christie

1992 — "Do French Dance Songs Obey the Rules of Rhetoric?," in David Lasocki, ed., Fluting and Dancing, (New York: McGinnis & Marx,1992), pp. 104-130. (An adaptation for English-speaking readers of the 1988 French article, at the request of Betty Bang Mather, for her festschrift)

1992 — "A Fresh Look at French Wind Articulations," American Recorder, 33 (1992), pp. 9-17. (Described by the journal as "a completely new approach to the application of French tonguing syllables and a revisiting of notes inégales," this article caused quite a stir because it does not fit the notion of tonguings that twentieth-century historians of performance practices deduced on the basis of instrumental treatises. I replied to their protests in the March and June issues of 1993.)

1993 — "L'hémiole chantée, Quelques réflexions sur les ‘réflexions' de Herbert Schneider," Revue de musicologie, 79 (1993), pp. 227-262

Nivers," presented at conference on French Baroque Plainsong under auspices of the Centre de Music Baroque de Versailles, in J. Duron, ed., Plain-Chant et liturgie en France au XVIIe siècle, (Paris: Klincksieck, 1997), pp. 59-83

1998 — "French Articulations: a Mirror of French Song," Traverso, vol. 9, no. 3, July 1997, pp. 1-2

2001 — "French Articulation: The Lessons of Thésée," American Recorder, 42 (2001), pp. 6-13

Person-to-person activities involving word-music relationships

1983 — Three lectures on rhetoric to the singers and instrumentalists of the Arts Florissants

1984 — Participated for 3 weeks in rehearsals for the Arts Florissants' recording of Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Médée; coached the original "Jason" (who had to withdraw at the last minute) and "Médée," both of whom are English-speaking and did not know the rudiments of French poetry. (This was a pivotal experience, for it showed me that musicians must have an understanding of how poetry functions in song.)

1988 on — Coaching singers in Washington D.C. area on French and Latin declamation; coaching vocal and instrumental students at the Peabody Conservatory of Baltimore; coaching a recording artist in Paris about the words that can be imagined beneath the notes of the French pieces he was preparing

1990 — Course in pronunciation of French latin for the pages at the choir school run by the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles

1995 — Invited to give a lecture at the symposium on singing being planned for Utrecht, September, as preparation for William Christie's master class. The symposium was subsequently cancelled although the project has not been abandoned

1996-98 — Coached the Opera class at the Peabody Conservatory on French rhetoric during rehearsals for French Baroque operas they were preparing

1998 — Was the "rhetorician" for the re-creation of Jean-Baptiste Lully's Thésée, sponsored by the European Baroque Academy of the Festival of Ambronay, France, and directed by William Christie/The Arts Florissants
