Choose another year from the "Roman" cahiers
It is possible that the first works shown in this chart were written for events held shortly before January 1, 1670. These works are so polyvalent that is is difficult to date them, other than to assert that the watermarks and construction of the notebooks suggest that they are the earliest extra-Guise commissions that Charpentier received after returning from Italy. These works were clearly intended for two distinct musical ensembles. Indeed, the works for the ensemble shown in red is so unusual (Jean Duron once commented to me that it and the music smacks of the provinces, not the capital!) that I wonder if at least some of these pieces were composed for the canonization festivities held at Alençon during the final days of 1670. For example, there were frequent vespers services that week, and almost daily masses.
