The "Roman" cahiers for 1674

Cahier XVII contains the revised version of Le Malade Imaginaire, with what Charpentier called the "deffenses," that is, the modifications imposed upon the theatrical troop as a result of Lully's invoking of his privilege. Years after Charpentier's death, when a list of works inherited by his nephew was drawn up, a prelude for a funeral piece (since lost) concluded this notebook. I have no hypothesis about the funeral for which  it was intended. Judging from the way the pieces succeed one another from 1673 through early 1675, Charpentier's non-Guise activities for 1674 seem to have been restricted to the revisions of Le Malade, plus the funeral that  apparently involved a reuse of the music in cahier 5 written for the Guises in 1672.
